Role Purpose:

This role is responsible for monitoring market changes, regulatory updates, and business needs from an operational perspective (MSS Operations Japan), assessing their impact on operations, and leading system-related projects as needed.

Given the diverse range of products handled within Markets & Securities Services (MSS), the successful candidate must efficiently manage multiple ongoing initiatives, prioritize tasks appropriately, and optimize resources to maintain operational stability and efficiency.

The role involves leading system implementation and enhancement projects related to market infrastructure changes (JASDEC, BOJ, JSCC, JDCC, JPX, etc.) regulatory compliance, process optimization, and digital transformation.

In addition to system-related projects, the role will also drive operational reviews, process improvements, and governance enhancements to ensure continuous operational excellence.

A strong sense of professional ethics, integrity, and ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders – both internal and external – is essential for success in this role.

  • This is a Vice President (VP) level position within the Operations team under MSS. The individual will play a key role in leading complex projects that impact operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and business processes.
  • The role operates within a highly dynamic and regulated environment, requiring continuous monitoring of market infrastructure, industry changes, and internal business needs.
  • The individual will be responsible for balancing multiple priorities, managing stakeholders across different functions, and ensuring alignment wit both regional and global initiatives.
  • The role involves a high degree of autonomy and decision-making authority, particular in defining project strategies, prioritizing operational improvements, and engaging with IT and external vendors to drive system-related changes.
  • Although overall strategic direction and high-level priorities are set by senior leadership, the individual will be expected to take initiative, provide expert recommendations, and influence decision-making within the Operation function.
  • The role requires effective cross-functional collaboration with Business, Technology, Risk & Compliance, and external market infrastructure entities, ensuring that projects are executed smoothly and aligned with regulatory requirements and organizational goals.
  • As part of a global financial institution, the role will also require close coordination with regional and global teams, ensuring that Tokyo’s operational strategies align with international standards and best practices.
  • The successful candidate must capable of working independently while also leading project teams, demonstrating strong leadership in operational transformation and efficiency initiatives.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Assess operational impact of market, regulatory, and business changes and drive necessary system enhancements or implementations.
  • Work closely with IT teams and external vendors to define, design, develop, test, and implement system solutions.
  • Manage system-related projects to ensure smooth transitions with minimal operational disruption.
  • Lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and ensure operational teams are well-prepared for system changes.
  • Oversee post-implementation process changes, training, and follow-ups to ensure success system adoption.
  • Continuously monitor changes in market infrastructure (JASDEC, BOJ, JSCC, JDCC, JPX, etc.) and assess their impact on operations.
  • Conduct operational impact reviews for regulatory and market changes, identifying necessary adjustment to workflows and systems.
  • Engage with industry bodies, regulators, and internal teams to stay updated on market development and ensure timely information sharing with operations teams.
  • Lead operational process reviews to improve efficiency, mitigate risks, and strengthen internal controls.
  • Identify areas for improvement and implement optimization initiatives to enhance operational performance.
  • Oversee compliance, risk management, and data quality reviews to ensure transparency and accuracy in operations.
  • In accordance with HSBC policy, vendor management is one of the critical tasks in MSS Operations. Be in charge of Vendor Management exercise and complete necessary action by designated application.

Qualifications
  • +10 years within an investment banking organization
  • Experience working under the environment where seek for the mind-set of change.
  • Proven experience in change/project management in a growing / evolving business
  • Successful at working with management and senior stakeholders at different levels
  • Deep understanding of securities operations within a minimum of 3 years’ experience in an operational role.
  • Proven experience in managing projects related to market infrastructure changes.
  • Strong ability to translate operational needs into system requirements.
  • Hands-on experience in system implementation, process optimization, and UAT.
  • Familiarity with market infrastructure institutions (JASDEC, BOJ, JSCC, JDCC, JPX, etc.)
  • Strong professional ethics and teamwork mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Project management certifications (PMP, Prince2, etc.)
  • Experience with emerging technologies (AI, RPA, cloud, blockchain)
  • Regional or global project experience.
  • Fluency in English (reading, writing, speaking)
