Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking an ambitious individual to join our Corporate and Institutional Legal team covering markets regulatory, working together with colleagues to define, manage and achieve divisional business targets. 

 As our Senior Legal Counsel, Markets and Regulatory you will:  

  • Provide legal advice, guidance and support to the Corporate and Institutional businesses to help achieve commercial objectives while ensuring that exposure to legal risk is managed. Ideal candidates should have a minimum of five years of legal experience with a strong knowledge of US securities laws, FINRA broker-dealer rules, and CFTC rules and regulations. A knowledge of regulations relating to equity prime brokerage financing and/or futures and cleared swaps is a plus

  • Adhere to the position requirements which include strong advocacy, negotiation, interpersonal, organizational, legal research and verbal and written communication skills

  • Work independently, seeking out and maintaining internal client relationships, managing workload calendars effectively, interacting appropriately with internal clients up to and including senior management

  • Show an ability to led by influence, drive change, and move quickly and seamlessly between diverse, complex topics

  • Remain up to date on existing and changing laws and regulations relating to the firm’s market’s businesses and ensure key stakeholders understand the potential impact of pending changes

  • Have conversations with external clients related to complex trading agreement negotiations and regulatory issues impacting the firm’s business relationship with its clients

  • Drive implementation of scalable process/procedure improvements related to client negotiations and regulatory change to achieve commercial objectives while appropriately managing the firm’s risk

  • Leverage your experience by working at a US regulated broker-dealer, futures commission merchant, bank and bank holding company, which are critical legal entities of a systemically important global bank, to provide expert, professional legal, and strategic advice, guidance, and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by businesses in the US are identified, reported and mitigated

  • Be a trusted advisor to the businesses and functions in the U.S. and globally on markets related regulatory issues

  • Assist with driving the company’s regulatory policy advocacy initiatives with U.S. regulators (including banking, financial, securities, and derivatives regulators), collaborating with Legal, Public Affairs, and business and functional partners in the U.S. and globally

  • Partner cross functionally to assess risk and to solve complex regulatory issues.

For this role, HSBC targets a pay range between $230,000 and $280,000. 
 
The final fixed pay offer will depend on the candidate and a few variables, including but not limited to, role responsibilities, skill set, depth of experience and education, licensing/certification requirements, internal relativity, and specific work location.

Requirements

You´ll likely have the following qualifications to succeed in this role:

  • Experience attorney in Markets and Regulatory

  • Minimum of a Juris Doctorate degree as well as admission to applicable state Bar and pertinent levels of courts in applicable states

  • Strong advocacy, negotiation, interpersonal, organizational, legal research and verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to quickly apply abstract concepts of law and make quick, innovative decisions to resolve problems

  • Ability to defend the Company and Group affiliates from claims and advocate their interests while maintaining their reputation for honesty and integrity
