Role Purpose:

Senior Risk Manager at HSBC Global Asset Management (AMJP) is responsible for leading the Asset Management Risk function of AMJP to ensure that all the risks within Asset management Japan are being identified, assessed, monitored and controlled per the local regulation, HSBC Group standards and market best practices to protect the clients, employees, assets and reputation of the company and support the growth of the assets and their profitability.

Risks include but is not limited to investment risk, counterparty credit risk, operational risk, liquidity risk, information risk, legal and regulatory risk as well as overall reputational risk to the business from any source.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Implement risk policies to ensure AMJP operates within AM Group approved risk appetite in achieving the strategic goals and growth.
  • Put in place the agreed risk governance framework including appropriate committees and governance forums. In particular chair the Risk Management Meeting supported by the Management of AMJP
  • Assist the AM Asia Pacific CRO and AMJP management identifying Top & Emerging risk issues and initiate mitigating actions
  • Ensure the effectiveness and embedding of operational risk management framework that meets Group, business and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure that AMJP’s market risk, investment risk, liquidity risk and counterparty credit risk metrics and analyses are fit for purpose and meet business and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that the risk management tools and/or models used to produce metrics and analyses are fit for purpose.
  • Ensure risks in new products and services originated or distributed in AMJP are properly considered via the Local Product Committee.
  • Put procedures in place or exercise independent oversight over processes to manage the risks within AM Group risk appetite before products or services are launched.
  • Engage with peers risk stakeholders across Asset management entities to set up an effective oversight of the delegated investment management activities in accordance with internal policies and Japanese regulation and requirements, especially in regards to investment risk monitoring.
  • Monitor, report and escalate in the appropriate risk forum any exception for further discussion and decision.
  • Engage with our customers/colleagues and stakeholders to build a trust-based relationship and deliver an effective feedback and support, enabling continual development and service improvement while protecting them.
  • Liaise with AM Asia Pacific CRO and his/her regional risk team to ensure they understand what is required and support AMG Japan to meet Group, business and regulatory requirements
  • Key member of the main governance forums of AMJP engaging with all of their stakeholders to understand the situations and the risks which may arise from them to therefore ensure the appropriate risk measures to be taken.
  • Support the business in client presentations and due diligence
  • Support the AM ASP CRO in different regional risk initiatives and possible risk oversight activities in Asia
  • Take a positive and constructive approach towards problems and issues using appropriate risk management tools and techniques to deal with them effectively and in a timely manner
  • Look for way to improve process/system efficiency while minimizing the risks and focusing on medium and long term goals when under pressure or in times of uncertainty
  • Take ownership and personal responsibility for completing the assigned tasks and persevere even when facing with challenging situations
  • Engage with the appropriate level of stakeholders and escalate accordingly considering the importance, urgency and impact on colleagues, customers, stakeholders and HSBC
  • Ensure risk policies and governance frameworks are appropriately implemented in their corresponding business
  • Promote the use of risk management processes, tools and thoughts to fully embed the risk management framework across the entity and ultimately ensure the 3 lines of Defence model implementation and embedding
  • Review, challenge and endorse the completion of Risk Control Assessment (RCA) for AMJP in coordination with Chief Control Office and engaging with the corresponding Risk owners
  • Embed efficient risk and compliance processes and procedures into the usual business practices and risk monitoring coverage
  • Maintain sufficient and effective processes and controls identifying and mitigating risks and ensure timely escalation and resolution of all control issues and reputation risks.
  • Maintain awareness of risk and minimizes the likelihood of it occurring through its identification, assessment, mitigation and control
  • Pro-active in sharing regulatory documentation and knowledge, identifying the risks for AMG if any in the appropriate forums
  • Analyze and assess impacts of any regulatory change initiated by the local regulator on AMJP Risk management strategy, policy and practice and contribute to the delivery of the appropriate changes
  • Clearly articulate fiduciary risks with respect to HSBC Asset Management Japan clients, escalate issues and propose appropriate action.
  • Support and encourage close links with Product (design, new launch and review), RFP, Sales and CP team, client Due Diligence to support business growth
  • Leverage the new risk systems and capabilities to further enhance our monitoring and understanding of investment risk to support existing and potential new clients
  • Oversight of the investment risk of different asset classes: implementation of the appropriate and consistent monitoring frameworks in line with Risk principles and policy

Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in Finance or related discipline, professional certification (CFA, FRM, PRM, …) is a plus.
  • Solid finance knowledge of financial instruments and their valuations mechanisms
  • Robust understanding and in-depth knowledge in regards to the management and monitoring of different types of risk: liquidity, market, counterparty, valuation and pricing of instruments: creation and/or development of improved diversified and complete risk metrics, methodologies, framework, processes and systems based on in-depth knowledge and experience
  • Ability to translate the understanding of regulatory and/or internal principles and policy into more complex actions and output: creation of exposure metrics using or developing a model, development of practical processes and processes, establishing methodology for determining risk exposure limits
  • Ability to establish credibility, authority and influence with the key stakeholders, while developing engagement and communication with them
  • Senior experience in asset management industry, preferably in risk and controls functions, within an international work environment
  • General understanding of the local (across Asian countries) and main overseas legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Business oriented, forward looking
  • Language skills: business Japanese, fluent English
  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure, sometimes with tight deadlines, curious, well-organized, analytical and numerical skills, team-player but ability to work independently and take initiatives, oral and written communication skills in English
