We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of VP-Decision Science GSC.

Role :

A mature analytics capability, the Global Analytics Center (GAC), is a hub of advanced analytics competency, providing high-end analytics services across global businesses and global functions. Set-up in India in 2004, GAC has matured into a shared Centre of Excellence comprising 2000+ professionals with offices in Bangalore, Kolkata, Vizag, Guangzhou and Krakow. The work done in GAC forms a vital input towards for strategic planning by the senior management for businesses and enables effective decision making along with addressing unforeseen challenges.

Opportunity:

Wealth & Private Banking (WPB) Risk in HSBC supports the Retail Credit, Private Banking, Insurance, Asset Management and Wealth businesses to grow in a safe and sustainable way. As a global function it is responsible for the risk management framework, which includes establishing global policy, monitoring risk profiles, forward looking risk identification and management, which is used to set global WPB Risk Appetite.

Wealth & Private Banking (WPB) Risk, Global Analytics Center, India is a professional services entity within the Group, which provides analytics support for various credit risk functions across retail & private banking domain namely a) credit risk strategy analytics, b) credit risk modeling, c) regulatory analytics- Basel and stress testing, d) IFRS9, e) loss forecasting & reserving, f) data & portfolio insights, g) vintage profitability etc.

Credit Risk Strategy Analytics is one of the key functional areas within WPB Risk in GAC. This function owns the development and management of risk strategies related to various credit decisions. This ranges from customer acquisition to account management, collections & fraud risk strategies across a range of secured and unsecured retail & private banking products.

This role is part of Business Consulting job family and would encompass leading c.7+ member team for Asia credit risk strategy analytics that includes analysts, managers and AVPs. The individual will be directly accountable for development & management of risk strategies in accordance with business priorities.

Business Consulting job family is structured to address end-to-end business needs. Members of this job family are differentiated by their capability of providing the required consultation & work with end-business by way of assessing the requirements, identifying the right analytical solution that can solve for the business problem, and developing the same for execution – often covering areas of business growth, improving customer experience, limiting risk exposure, enhancing internal business processes etc. They are required to, as necessary, embed agile & exploratory practices into their approach as needed, and retain the flexibility to change track to adopt other solutions based on changed scenarios, in order to deliver on effective results. This talent group can be tapped into for providing solutions for varying areas including improving existing processes, technology and approaches by embedding exploratory & analytics & taking it forward with a consulting mind set.

  • Strong understanding of business domain, its strategic direction, functional goals, and the required technical & functional expertise at Global level. Makes decisions, even with unstructured business problems at a pace that balances the need for further analysis and the need for timely decision given business priorities / requirements
  • Support to develop a consulting culture within team, partner with functional business leaders in developing analytical strategies / decision making to achieve higher value
  • Translate key analytical solutions as generic and re-deployable across multiple regions / markets. Drive redeployment of the solutions

Management of Risk/Internal Controls/Compliance:

  • The jobholder will continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.
  • The jobholder will also adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls. This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant procedures, keeping appropriate records and, where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points, including issues raised by external regulators.
  • The jobholder will implement the Group compliance policy by containing compliance risk in liaison with Global Head of Compliance, Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term ‘compliance’ embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply.
  • This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations with regulators.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead and manage a team of c. 7+ members supporting credit risk strategy development & management for secured & unsecured portfolios across various markets in Asia working with the regional risk teams. 
  • Accountable for development of Acquisition (Approve-Decline, Line Assignment) and Account Management (Credit Line Increase/Decrease, Authorization) strategies                                                                                                       
  • Conduct periodic strategy monitoring and mitigation exercise to ensure adherence to risk appetite.
  • Establish and set up early warning systems for portfolio trends resulting into proactive risk management.
  • Ensure proper control and governance of all credit risk strategy development & management processes. Support process reviews and audits from time to time. Work closely with auditors and reviewers and ensure highest standards are maintained for every analytical solution
  • Engage with business stakeholders with respect to project prioritization and be accountable for delivery of high quality analytical solutions.
  • Ensure stakeholder satisfaction on all solution deliveries and support innovative analytical thinking & solutions that results in improved business performance
  • Support development of consulting culture within team that seeks for opportunities to expand & deepen relationships with stakeholders
  • Identify opportunities to translate key analytical solutions for redeployment across other regions / countries
  • Drive operational efficiency, cost management and process improvement initiatives
  • Be accountable for hiring, learning & development and talent management for the c. 7+ strong team
  • Ensure adherence to business policies and process compliance
Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

  • Minimum 14 years of hands-on analytics experience solving complex business problems using data.
  • PhD or Master’s degree from reputed university in statistics, economics or any other quantitative fields.
  • Strong analytical skills with business analysis experience or equivalent. In-depth knowledge and understanding of financial-services/ banking-operations is a must.
  • Strong understanding of consumer lending products like credit cards, mortgages, loans & overdrafts is a must.
  • In depth hands on exposure in core credit risk management and analytics in retail banking or financial institutions.
  • Excellent communication skills with technical (the team) and non-technical (senior management in region) counterparts - being able to "translate" between the two worlds is essential.
  • Proven leadership track record in dynamic/changing banking environments and complex matrix structure.
  • Ability to establish strong relationships with stakeholders, both internally and externally.
  • Strong understanding of the competitor landscape and industry best practices.
  • Exceptionally strong organizational, problem-solving & inter-personal skills. Ability to communicate clearly across all levels.
  • An Entrepreneurial spirit/drive to execute quickly with the simultaneous ability to navigate through multiple layers of organizational complexities.  

What additional skills will be good to have?

  • Understanding of new age advanced analytics (Machine Learning) tools and solutions will be preferred.
  • Knowledge of advanced project management especially ‘Agile’ will be preferred.
