Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, market and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth. 

We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join our Risk and Compliance function in the role Director, Reputational, Sustainability Risk and Climate Risk, Asia and Middle East.

Role purpose

  • Global Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a sub function of Group Risk and Compliance. Its purpose is to make sure HSBC is equipped with a coherent Risk Management Framework, Risk Taxonomy and the tools to enable it to understand and operate within its Global Risk Appetite and effectively manage its overall risk position. It seeks to strengthen the risk culture across the organisation through driving consistent risk management practices across our businesses and functions at global, regional and market level. ERM achieves this through robust oversight and stewardship of the end-to-end processes, risks, and controls ensuring it complies with risk, business and regulatory priorities. Enabling the bank to grow safely, be forward looking, and meet its strategic objectives.
  • The role holder is responsible for ensuring that Reputational, Sustainability and Climate Risk across Asia and the Middle East is managed, embedded and adheres to the defined standards as per the appropriate frameworks, policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.

Accountabilities for Business, Customers and Stakeholders

Reputational Risk:

  • Lead on Reputational Risk management across the 2LoD in the region covering Asia and Middle East.
  • Provide stewardship over 1LoD activities related to Reputational Risk including reputational risks relating to our Net Zero commitments and greenwashing.
  • Lead change initiation, design and delivery and be accountable for successful delivery of refreshed or new policy in priority areas in region.
  • Contribute to relevant Transformation Programmes within the region by proactively engaging and assisting in the identification and mitigation of risk. 
  • Set approach for Reputational Risk Management across entities, regions, countries and markets. 
  • Provide advice and support to Global Businesses and Global Functions in relation to reputational risks, including ensuring (through authoring or 2LOD review and opinion on papers prepared by others) that high quality papers are presented to relevant committees.
  • Drive improved senior stakeholder insight and decision making for Reputational Risk, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations.
  • Aggregate reporting/analysis of the environment, thematic analysis and read across for Reputational risk.

Sustainability Risk

  • Lead on Sustainability Execution Risk management across the 2LoD in the region covering Asia and Middle East.
  • Provide stewardship over 1LoD activities related to Sustainability Execution Risk across the region, delivering effective Risk Stewardship in line with the Risk Management Framework.
  • Provide technical advice and support to the across the 1LOD ensuring they understand and are aware of the control environment and assessment of risk. 
  • Provide subject matter expertise, advice, guidance, and effective challenge to the Risk and Control Owners
  • Lead change initiation, design and delivery and be accountable for successful delivery of refreshed or new policy in priority areas.
  • Contribute to relevant Transformation Programmes within the region by proactively engaging and assisting in the identification and mitigation of risk. 
  • Act as approver for client or transactional clearances as required under Sustainability Risk polices.
  • Ensure that lending undertaken under Green Sustainability Linked product meets HSBC Risk Appetite.
  • Drive improved senior stakeholder insight and decision making for Sustainability Execution Risk.
  • Aggregate reporting/analysis of the environment, thematic analysis and read across for Sustainability execution risk.
  • Drive the evolving Sustainability risk agenda, working with other stakeholders in the development of, and execution of, activities aligned with the identification and mitigation of relevant risks relating to HSBC’s activities and portfolios, in line with regulatory and stakeholder expectations. 

Climate Risk

  • Lead on Climate Risk management across the 2LoD in the region, covering Asia and Middle East
  • Ensuing climate risks that are relevant to each risk type in HSBC’s risk taxonomy are identified, assessed, and managed within appetite across the region. 
  • Provide advice and subject matter advisory support to Global Businesses and Global Functions in relation to climate risk, to find efficient and effective ways of embedding Climate risk into processes, behaviours and assist execution accordingly.
  • Lead identification in the region of high priority processes where Climate Risk should be embedded, providing SME input in design and implementation of process changes.
  • Drive improved senior stakeholder insight and decision making for Climate Risk, ensuring that the Board and Executive Management have visibility and oversight of the highest Climate Risks to discharge their responsibilities in relation to these.
  • Aggregate reporting/analysis of the environment, thematic analysis and read across for Climate risk.
  • Manage Climate Risk Reporting for formal governance committees. 
  • Define, support and embed the ongoing review of the Climate Risk Approach within the region to further integrate Climate Risk drivers and themes, ensuring that the principles of this approach are aligned with relevant legislation and the expectations of regulators and other key stakeholders.
  • Drive the evolving Climate risk agenda, working with other stakeholders in the development of, and execution of, activities aligned with the identification and mitigation of relevant risks relating to HSBC’s activities and portfolios.
  • Lead the development and implementation of governance mechanisms (including committee oversight and individual approval authorities) for Climate related Risk management for the region. 

Leadership & Teamwork 

  • Represent ERM to key stakeholders both internally and as directed externally.
  • Contribute to a forward-looking agenda, including horizon scanning, for emerging risks and challenges that ERM and the Bank may face.
  • Provide oversight to the First-line’s adoption of Standards, Processes and Procedures required to implement the Policy objectives across the Group and support the embedding of the Risk Framework by working with the Risk Control owners in their area.
  • Provide robust oversight, formal input, challenge and guidance to first-line risk and control owners across entities / countries within the Group enabling business growth and innovation while maintaining risk within appetite.
  • Communicate across technical, business, and strategic levels to ensure that stakeholders understand how their delivery is aligned with the Bank and ERMs strategic goals.
  • Lead your team in accordance with the direction set by your ERM ExCo member, including the day-to-day management of your direct and indirect team members.
  • Drive positive Risk culture behaviours including, supporting, guiding and mentoring all colleagues working as part of global virtual teams.
  • Support the recruitment and retention of colleagues, including succession planning, talent management and performance management, continuously driving improvement in employee engagement, diversity and inclusion.
  • Where required and directed, build effective relationships with local Regulators to keep abreast of trends in the management of risk, supporting efforts to drive HSBC’s position in this context.
  • As required, drive relevant Transformation Programmes within the Group by proactively engaging and assisting in the identification and mitigation of risk. This includes early intervention in new designs to ensure Risk is considered from the beginning.
  • Partner with other oversight functions and Internal / External Audit to ensure a holistic view of risk profile. Including leading on the delivery and closure of Audit points and Management Self-Identified Issues.
  • Own the alignment and embedding of relevant services delivered by the service catalogue ensuring consistent implementation across entities, countries and markets, as appropriate.
  • Effectively communicate with large number of internal (first line, senior management, audit) and external (external auditors, regulators) stakeholders on risk identification, governance and management
  • Drive efficiencies through consistently identifying better ways of working, including standardisation under the global framework.
Requisitos

Functional Knowledge

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Experience in risk management at a Globally Significant Financial Institution (GSFI).
  • Understands the impact of reputational, sustainability and climate risk within HSBC Group and its commercial context and strategic ambitions.
  • Very strong knowledge of the relevant regulatory landscape and ability to access the impact of proposed changes in regulatory rules to the bank, especially those pertaining to reputational, sustainability and risk.
  • Deep knowledge of a financial institutions business model, products and key risk drivers and a demonstrated ability to effectively balance risk management, regulatory expectations and commercial pragmatism.
  • A deep understanding and technical expertise of reputational, sustainability and risk, including how this risk can be identified, assessed, monitored and controlled and mitigated where relevant.
  • Ability to lead and promote a strong risk control culture and develops communication strategies to improve risk awareness.
  • Experience of establishing and maintaining external relationships, including some experience of interfacing with regulators.
  • Proven ability to develop strong networks with key stakeholders at all points in a matrix structure.
  • Leading a multi-locational team of professionals.
  • Providing expert advice and robust challenge, delivering risk management policies and managing risks and controls.

  • Team-oriented mentality combined with ability to complete tasks independently to a high-quality standard.

Qualifications:

  •  Relevant data qualifications/certificates/experience
  •  A BA or BS University Degree, advanced degrees preferable, (e.g. MBA, MSc, PhD)
