Role purpose :

Global Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a sub function of Group Risk and Compliance. Its purpose is to make sure HSBC understands and effectively controls its non-financial risk position, through end-to-end oversight of processes, risks, and controls and by robust stewardship of the bank's risk appetite to comply with risk, business, and regulatory priorities. It seeks to strengthen the risk culture across the organisation through the application of effective policies and frameworks that drive consistent risk management practices across our businesses and functions at global, regional and market level.

 

Principal Responsibilities

The Senior Manager Risk Strategy, INM is responsible for:

Risk Governance

·       Ensure appropriate Governance structures in place to identify, assess, manage and report keys risks across INM

·       Provide support to drive the agenda, quality of papers and discussions at the INM RMM.

·       Provide support to manage direct escalations and risk engagement with INM RMM and INM Exco

·       Facilitate escalation, both to the Governance Meetings and on a real time basis, of matters for awareness from lines of businesses and ensures appropriate cascade of issues through the INM.

Risk Frameworks including Risk Appetite

·       Contribute to the development of the Group Risk Management Framework supplemented by INM addendum (as required).

·       Ensure that risk management frameworks are embedded within INM and provide guidance to the Global Businesses to achieve the same. 

·       Ensures that Risk frameworks and Risk appetite are effectively communicated to and implemented by the appropriate stakeholders at country level.

·       Ensure an effective risk appetite review process including the twice-yearly update to the INM Risk Appetite, ensuring that this provides a comprehensive statement of the nature and level of the risks that INM wishes to take.

·       Support second line risk challenge to the Financial Resources Plan, Stress Testing and Risk Input into the ICAAP.

·       Ensure robust oversight of risk strategy components of key regulatory initiatives in INM, with interaction with regulator

Risk Reporting

·       Responsible for Enterprise Risk Reporting, including the preparation of the Risk Profile Paper, underlying ERRs, Key Risk Management Information and maintenance of associated systems.

·       Co-ordinates risk disclosures within INM financial statements

·       Prepares materials for regular and ad-hoc meetings with, and requests from, regulators and other parties

 

Leadership & Teamwork 

·       Lead and manage a team of approx. 3 staff including succession planning talent management, performance management and improving employee engagement

·       Ensure clear specification of services provided by Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and work with CoE management to ensure the appropriate development planning of that team.

·       Work effectively with the INM Risk leadership team, including contribution to the activities to join up the Global / Regional risk function so that it is considered to be "Best in Class". 

·       Functionally align with local/regional risk teams to understand, interpret, and provide regional direction and support, driving towards consistency and common frameworks. Identify, transfer and foster sharing of best practice across regions

Functional Knowledge

·       Strong knowledge and ability to interpret HSBC Group’s Risk Governance, Risk Management Frameworks and Risk Policies.

·       Subject matter expertise in governance and risk frameworks and experience of having worked within the second line of defence and in a governance role would be a distinct advantage.

·       Strong understanding of the regulatory environments applicable to the above business lines

·       The role is responsible for leading the preparation of external risk disclosures and materials to regulators which requires analysis and attention to detail.  Whilst not a requirement a numerical or analytical background would be an advantage

 

Communication skills

·       Strong communication skills both verbal and written, to ensure with the preparation of materials for and the direct engagement with the most senior executive and non-executive management in the region, with senior stakeholders in Group and with key external parties including regulators.  Ability to synthesize information and reports across regions and businesses, glean insights and distil them into a communique that resonates with stakeholders is key

·       The individual must possess strategic thought leadership, sound judgment, strong relationship management skills in order to reach and influence a wide range of audience and reinforce the risk culture.

·       The role holder also has responsibility for engagement with group colleagues and for guidance and advice to sites and experience of working with each, and ideally having worked within a site, would be an advantage.

·       Strong management information background, both in terms of required content, production processes and understanding what drives the numbers reported

Leadership skills

·       Outstanding leadership skills, demonstrating ability to initiative and effect change through people in a large matrix organisation.

·       The role holder will need lead the roll out of new initiatives and may have to assist in the resolution of issues where responsibilities may be unclear.  Strong influencing skills, ability to manage through uncertainty, and experience of working with a wide group of stakeholders, in each of the three lines of defence, is essential.

Eligibility Criteria

  • India Bank / INM employees will be eligible to apply to this role after completion of 12 months in the current role/position at the time of application on level transfer and/or promotion.
