Principal responsibilities
This role offers an exciting and highly visible opportunity to transition from legacy technologies to a modern platform within HSBC’s Core Banking division. You will lead the technical design and engineering practices, ensuring the successful delivery of technology transformations that uphold HSBC’s reputation and resilience. This position provides a platform to make a significant impact, fostering innovation and excellence in engineering within a dynamic and inclusive culture.
• Engineering Leadership:
o Drive hands-on engineering for major program deliveries.
o Provide thought leadership across the global engineering community.
o Lead the SWAT team for critical issues or engineering challenges.
o Enhance software development quality by spearheading the Engineering Standards function.
• Solution Design & Delivery:
o Oversee delivery planning, testing, migration, and deployment of multiple banking products and their architectures.
o Collaborate with technical product owners, architects, system analysts, and engineers to support various customer banking products.
o Define and uphold technological principles and strategic direction for the engineering team.
• Strategic Planning:
o Align technology strategies with the Core Banking Future State Architecture.
o Establish and automate processes to ensure high-quality, predictable code and data.
o Drive the continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline within a DevSecOps environment.
• Stakeholder Management:
o Engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders and partners across HSBC.
o Liaise with engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to guide product and platform directions.
o Promote HSBC’s involvement and influence in the engineering space through industry groups and vendor relationships.
• Innovation & Best Practices:
o Promote the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and engineering practices.
o Stay updated on tools, technologies, cybersecurity, and relevant regulations (e.g., data privacy, consent, data residency).
o Mentor and coach engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
• Operational Excellence:
o Ensure system resilience, sustainability, and recovery time objectives are met.
o Balance risks and rewards to maximize cost-effectiveness and profitability.
o Lead and influence global teams, respecting diverse cultures and working collaboratively across regions.
• Experience:
o 15+ years in developing and implementing software solutions.
o Proven success in senior technology leadership roles within complex financial services organizations.
o Extensive experience in core banking platforms and large-scale technology transformations.
• Technical Expertise:
o Deep knowledge of software development, architecture, and infrastructure.
o Hands-on experience building scalable, high-performance systems.
o Strong understanding of service performance metrics (e.g., SLA, MTTR).
• Leadership & Strategy:
o Ability to lead and influence across diverse technology organizations.
o Strategic thinker with strong business acumen and the ability to drive organizational change.
o Experience with agile at scale methodologies, Scaled Agile frameworks, and DevSecOps practices.
• Communication & Collaboration:
o Excellent stakeholder management and presentation skills.
o Ability to work effectively with global teams and respect different cultures.
o Strong mentoring and coaching abilities to develop engineering talent.
• Operational Skills:
o Proven capability in enterprise planning and managing complex projects.
o Expertise in process re-engineering and enhancing operational efficiency.
o Data-driven decision-making with a focus on operational effectiveness.
